Guro has been named the CFCW Social’s April Player of the Month for the second month in a row for her excellent performances this month. April was a month full of highs and lows. However, it was also a month that showed us strong performances from Guro and the rest of the team.
The month of April began with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the WSL. Guro scored our second goal of the night right before halftime, giving us a 2-0 lead against an in-form Villa side. Guro shone in this match, as she has done throughout the season.
Our next game last month was again against Aston Villa, but this time it was an FA Cup semi-final match. This was a close game, with both clubs competing for the remaining final spot and a chance to play at Wembley. Chelsea scored in the 59th minute with a headed goal by Kerr. This goal was born with Guro, who provided a wonderful assist that fell perfectly on Sam’s head. This goal secured our third consecutive appearance in the Women’s FA Cup final.
Whilst the beginning of the month was a high, unfortunately the end of April did not go quite to plan. With two games in quick succession against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the UWCL, we aimed to get ourselves to our second final. Unfortunately, this did not go to plan, but the team did us all immensely proud. Guro stood out in both matches, the first being at Stamford Bridge. The Catalan Giants scored after four minutes, our Norwegian superstar did score in this game. A goal which was sadly then ruled out for offside.
Our second match against Barcelona was a big one in front of 72,000 fans at Camp Nou. Although the Chelsea allocation was insufficient, a good number of Chelsea fans made the trip. In these two legs, the team performed far better away than at home. Barcelona, like in the previous leg, scored first after many battles, and this goal broke many hearts. Not long later, Guro scored, which is our first goal on our maiden outing at this stadium. Unfortunately, this was not enough, and we bowed out at the semi-final stage.
This month had its highs and lows, but one constant was Guro’s outstanding performances. She has received POTM for two months in a row for a reason: she is a great asset to our team and one of the top players in Europe.
May will undoubtedly bring fresh challenges, but Guro will meet them front on and prove herself to everyone once more. She could even win another POTM or similar award. Let us finish the season on a high!
