Chelsea FC Women vs West Ham United FC Women
With the original first home game of the season postponed due to the Queen’s passing, our home game against The Hammers now falls on the 28th of September at Kingsmeadow. Here is our Match Preview for the WSL Round 1 (PP).
Chelsea
Form: W-W-L-W
Our first game of the season left much to be desired. A poor performance against Liverpool at Prenton Park left many fans reeling. We controlled plenty of the play but failed to capitalise on opportunities as they came to us.
Our first home game of the season was a different story entirely. After a tame display in the first 40 minutes against the Citizens, Fran Kirby managed a beautiful goal in the 42nd minute. The result was sealed after Maren cooly converted a penalty in the 78th minute. A game which saw us secure a massive 3 points against a fierce rival in front of a packed-out Kingsmeadow was just what the doctor ordered.
West Ham
Form: L-L-W-L
West Ham have also had a rough start this season recording a 1-0 win in their first game at home against Everton. This was followed by a 2-0 defeat at home against Manchester United, a game which United controlled on every level.
Finding themselves sitting exactly where they finished last season West Ham will be keen to leave a mark on the league this year. There’s no better time to make a statement than at the home of the reigning champions and I think we can look forward to seeing a big game from some smart, tough players.
One big signing for the hammers this season will be the permanent contract given to Lisa Evans formerly of Arsenal. A player with big team experience who seems to bring a bit more fire to every game she can only help the Hammers on their journey. She was a key figure in the win against Everton, getting the winning goal and if she can get going then is dangerous against even the best team.
Previous Meetings
Chelsea and West Ham have faced each other 11 times throughout the WSL years and Chelsea won 10 of these matches. Dropped points came in March 2019 a game which ended with points shared in a 1-1 draw. West Ham who have never beaten the reigning champions come here with a point to prove. A new manager and a refreshed squad could mean trouble for the blues who will hope to continue their good form against London rivals.

Chelsea
Chelsea’s team news for this game will include the noticeable and long-standing absence of Melanie Leupolz, who is still away pregnant.
Pernille Harder was named to start against Liverpool in our opening game however was pulled out during warm-ups. We are unsure if this was to avoid risking her for this game or if it is a serious injury. Chelsea fans will hope she is back for this game as she has brilliant past form against the Ham
West Ham
West Ham are missing Emma Snerle still who was injured on international duty with Denmark.
Players To Watch
Chelsea
This season, we have a large squad with some incredibly talented players. Maren Mjelde is one player to keep an eye on for Chelsea.
Maren has unfortunately been out due to injury for a long time for Chelsea. It seems now though she has slotted back into the squad perfectly. A calm, level-headed player Maren is exactly who I want on the pitch for tough games. She exemplifies all the good in our team. After having a brilliant game against Manchester City I hope Maren can continue her good form into this game and any following.
West Ham
This season, West Ham has formed a strong foundation of players. Hawa Cissoko is one to keep an eye on in their team.
Cissoko is a brilliant defender I can confirm, a very strong aggressive player she has all the qualities you want in a centre-back. She might not win POTM every game but take nothing away from her awareness and ability both on and off the ball.

Final Thoughts and Prediction
Both teams will be looking for all three points to keep the tally going this season. Chelsea will want to make up for a poor defeat in the opener and carry on the good form found against City. Whilst the Hammers will want to bounce back from their league defeat. We can expect a good game with both sides going all out for the 3 points.
Final Score Prediction: Chelsea 2 – 0 West Ham
