Twitter Reactions from Chelsea’s 2012 Champions Leauge Triumph.

Who could ever forget the moment when we were crowned as the champions of Europe at the Allianz back in 2012? Surely, it was a moment that every Blue was waiting for and boy did the team deliver! The final was an embodiment of our journey that season as we fought with grit and determination from the very beginning. We had some iconic moments in our Champions League journey that season but the one that always takes the cake is Didier Drogba scoring the last spot-kick of the game to win us our maiden Champions League trophy.

While the emotions across the globe were pretty high that night, the one platform that was constantly on it for the next few days was everyones favourite social media platform, Twitter. Celebrities and fans from all over the globe took to their accounts to express their joy/dismay after that thrilling encounter between Bayern Munich and Chelsea at the glorious Bavarian city of Munich.

So today, we will be reliving some of the iconic tweets that made waves immediately after Chelsea were crowned as the champions on 19th of May 2012. So without any further adieu, let’s jump straight in to the tweets!

The teams:

The football fraternity:

Was an Arsenal player back then by the way.

Journalists:

And cricketers, of course:

Other notable personalities:

And some banter:

Louis Saha was a Tottenham Hostpur player when he tweeted this. He then went on to receive backlashes from his own fans.

Interestingly Chelsea were the clear winners in the Twitter battle as well that night. In a research by marketing firm ExactTarget, which analysed more than 1.1 million matchday tweets, it was revealed that 73% of the total tweets were team-specific mentions with regards to Chelsea while Bayern Munich accounted for only 27%. The same week Chelsea’s official twitter account crossed 1 million followers.

The top 5 mentioned players were Didier Drogba, John Terry, David Luiz, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech. Interestingly, Terry didn’t even feature in the finale.

While it was interesting to relive some of the over-exuberant tweets, what’s even more interesting is the fact that some of the well-renowned personalities have since gone on and deleted their celebratory tweets. Now, why did they do that? Well, that’s a story for another day!
