If you’re reading this then I’m sure the man himself, Jadon Sancho, needs no introduction, but incase you’re not aware here’s a little introduction.
Jadon Sancho is a 20-year-old English winger currently plying his trade in Germany for Borussia Dortmund, already having to his name two Bundesliga player of the month awards as well as being included in the Bundesliga 2018-19 team of the season among other accolades. For months now, Sancho has been linked with a move to the Chelsea Football Club.
Many clubs including Chelsea are vying for the young winger’s signature with a price tag of well over 100 million euros being reported. The question though, if given the opportunity, should we sign Jadon Sancho?
Before I get into more detail about this question that is being asked amongst supporters, everybody needs to be aware that the question is not being asked because myself or others are questioning his ability. Sancho, like many have described, looks like a ‘generational talent’ having already amassed 17 goals and 19 assists in 35 games this season. This question is being asked due to the fact that strengthening other key areas may be a higher priority than strengthening one.
The case for signing Jadon Sancho:
It’s quite simple really. At only 20 years old Sancho is already arguably the best winger in the German league. Combining pace, flair and a great dribbling ability with his eye for goal, he is one of the main reasons why his club Borussia Dortmund sit 2nd in the Bundesliga.
Apart from his 14 goals in 23 appearances this season, Sancho also has 15 assists to his name which should come as no surprise since the Englishman has created 68 chances this season in the Bundesliga, which in comparison to Chelsea winger, Willian, having amassed 56 chances created having played 129 more minutes than Jadon Sancho. The other reason many supporters would love to see the star winger join the Blues is due to the loss of Eden Hazard after last season, many supporters want that large sum of money invested on a player of that value.
The case for not signing Jadon Sancho:
As the case for signing Jadon Sancho is simple, for those that don’t want to sign Sancho the case is also as simple. For most, it’s not down to worrying about his ability, it’s down to the fact that numerous positions within the club need to be strengthened (including the left and centre of defence as well the forward line and for some the goalkeeping position) and that they should take priority over the signing of one player that commands the fee of Sancho.
The other issue that has arisen recently is the economic impact that the virus around the world will have on everybody. This may make it even more difficult for a club to spend big on one player since we’re in a situation that nobody could have anticipated.
My verdict:
This is a situation where I can see both sides of the argument clearly, and with the arrival of Hakim Ziyech, it makes it even more difficult. I would love to see Jadon Sancho playing for Chelsea. Signing Sancho would be phenomenal, and just the thought of the combination of Sancho’s pace, dribbling and flair with Ziyech’s creativity, passing range and set pieces among the Chelsea players already there is something that makes me very, very excited. With that being said, I hope the club signs Jadon Sancho, but if they decide against it and would prefer to sign numerous players for smaller amounts, I would completely understand that and I would be ok with it.
I must say though to all of you Chelsea supporters, if we miss out on Sancho, it’s not the end of the world. We need to back Frank and the players to create a great chapter in the history books of our beloved Chelsea Football Club.
